Stretch: the fourth of the Seven Foundations

Stretching clears stagnant energy and creates space for vitality.

And it does not look like the stretching most people learned in a gym. We stretch the way cats do. Gently and often. Through soft spirals, waves, and expansive flows rather than through held positions and gritted teeth.

What lives here

Eagle Side Stretch. Heavy Elbows. Spiral Palms. Pulling Water from a Well.

What it is doing

Opening the meridian lines so energy has somewhere to go, and clearing what has settled and stopped moving.

The cat comparison is doing real work

A cat does not hold a stretch for 30 seconds counting under its breath. It stretches when it gets up, briefly and completely, and then goes about its day. Frequency over duration. That is the model.

Where it sits in a class

Mostly in the Wood phase, early, alongside Warm Up. Separating Heaven and Earth is a good example of a practice that lives here, and a student in the certification identified it as a stretch before I did, which was the right call.

Pairs with Warm Up.

Part of the Seven Foundations of Practice.

More on the practice as a whole at what Qigong does for the body, and on the daily version at 4 reasons why I love practicing Qigong.

Frequently asked questions

How is Qigong stretching different from regular stretching?

It is soft, spiralling and wave-like rather than held. We stretch the way cats do, briefly and often, rather than holding positions and counting.

How long should you hold a Qigong stretch?

You mostly do not hold. Frequency matters more than duration.

Where does stretching sit in a Qigong class?

Mostly in the Wood phase, early, alongside the warm-up.

Where to go next

If you have never practiced Qigong. Jump Start Your Energy is a free beginner class. No background needed, nothing to buy, and it is the fastest way to find out whether any of this does anything for you. Most people know within one session.

If you practice and want to go deeper. We teach live classes online every week, and there is a self-paced Introduction to Qigong if you would rather work through it in your own time.

If you want to teach this. Everything in this library is drawn from the Great Energy Qigong Teacher Certification. The frameworks are here in full because they are more useful shared than withheld. The training is where you learn to deliver them.

Keep reading. The rest of the framework library is at the Library, and our longer articles are on the blog.

Great Energy is an independent educational organization founded by Christopher Grant and Daniela Hess.
