Flow: the fifth of the Seven Foundations
Let it move through you.
Flow is where Qigong starts looking like the thing people picture when they hear the word. Soft, continuous, unhurried movement that circulates energy and lifts the spirit.

What lives here
Swimming Dragon. Quan Yin Paints a Rainbow. Flying Dove. Cloudy Hands.
What it is doing
Circulating. The earlier foundations wake energy up and clear space. Flow moves it around the system, and the continuity is the active ingredient. A movement performed as a series of positions is not flow, whatever it looks like.
The instruction people find hardest
In Qigong, flow is not about effort. It is about surrender.
I found this one hard for years. I came to movement through Ashtanga yoga, at Jivamukti on 2nd Avenue, 8am every day. Intense practice, and it worked, and it quieted my mind for the first time in my adult life. Three months in I got injured and could not practice, and I left yoga for the next 7 years.
I used to describe myself as a racehorse. If you do not run a racehorse, they kick the barn down.
Flow is the foundation that taught me the other thing. The less you drive it, the more it moves. That took a lot longer to learn than any sequence did.
Where it sits
Fire phase mostly, sometimes Metal at a lower intensity. It is the most adaptable of the seven, which is why it is the one to reach for when someone in the room needs the class to be gentler without the class losing its shape.
More on why the practice works this way at what does Qigong do for the body, and on the tiredness question at why do I feel tired after Qigong.
