Warm Up: the third of the Seven Foundations
Open the joints before you ask for bigger movement.
This is the least mysterious of the seven and the one most likely to be rushed. Circulation comes up, the nervous system gets warning that something is about to be asked of it, and the Qi starts moving freely rather than in fits.

What lives here
Magic 5. Open the Gates. Meridian Qigong Warmup.
What it is doing
Joints are where movement is either available or not. A shoulder that has not moved through its range since yesterday morning will not suddenly flow, and asking it to is how people decide Qigong is not for them. Warm Up makes the rest of the class possible.
This is also the foundation I would have skipped at 25 and cannot skip now. I got injured 3 months into a daily Ashtanga practice and lost 7 years of movement to it. The warm-up is the part of a class that is quietly protecting the people in front of you, including the ones who think they do not need it.
How long
The Wood phase it mostly lives in runs 8 to 15 minutes in a 60-minute class, shared with Stretch. That surprises people who expect a warm-up to be 2 minutes of arm circles. It is a phase, not a formality.
What it is not
Stretching. Those are separate foundations doing separate jobs. Warm-up opens and mobilizes while stretching clears and creates space. Related, not the same.
Part of the Seven Foundations of Practice.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a Qigong warm-up be?

What is the difference between warming up and stretching in Qigong?
Warm-up opens and mobilises the joints. Stretching clears stagnant energy and creates space. Related jobs, not the same one.
Why does the warm-up matter for beginners?
Because a body that has not moved through its range will not suddenly flow, and asking it to is how people decide Qigong is not for them.
