Shen: spirit, and the treasure you cannot chase

Shen is the energy of spirit, seated in the upper Dantian at the third eye.

It is the spark of inspiration. The instant knowing that connects you to something larger than your own planning.

What it is actually like

Shen arrives whole. It is instantaneous, more like a flash of light that illuminates the path ahead and then goes, leaving thoughts behind where it was.

Which means you have probably already had yours. Most people have. They have heard it so many times they have started to doubt it could be for them.

You are not a beginner at beginnings.

Its limitation

Shen is the foundation of all creation and on its own it does nothing.

An idea that never gets handed off stays an idea. It has to move to Qi, where your heart gets hold of it and it acquires some charge, and then to Jing, where your body does the work. Otherwise it is just a thing you think about occasionally and feel slightly bad about.

The other direction

When you are cultivating rather than creating, you do not go after Shen at all.

Nourish the physical body, keep the energy moving, and Shen rises on its own. Peace, clarity and a sense of connection to something greater are what a well-tended system produces. They are not targets you can aim at directly, and aiming at them is how people spend years getting nowhere.

That reversal is covered at the two directions.

In practice

Begin with stillness and set one clear intention. Then write down what you saw and heard afterward, which anchors it both in your own awareness and in the world where things get done.

Ask yourself what genuinely inspires you. Not what would look right.

Part of the Three Treasures and the Three Centers.

On the difficulty of reaching for stillness directly, why you cannot meditate takes up the same problem from another side. For the practice itself, what is Qigong.

Frequently asked questions

What is Shen in Qigong?

Spirit. Insight, intuition and consciousness, seated in the upper Dantian at the third eye.

Can you cultivate Shen directly?

No. Nourish the body and keep energy moving, and Shen rises on its own. Aiming at it directly is how people spend years getting nowhere.

Why is an idea alone not enough?

Because Shen on its own does nothing. It has to be handed to feeling and then to action, or it stays something you think about occasionally.

Where to go next

If you have never practiced Qigong. Jump Start Your Energy is a free beginner class. No background needed, nothing to buy, and it is the fastest way to find out whether any of this does anything for you. Most people know within one session.

If you practice and want to go deeper. We teach live classes online every week, and there is a self-paced Introduction to Qigong if you would rather work through it in your own time.

If you want to teach this. Everything in this library is drawn from the Great Energy Qigong Teacher Certification. The frameworks are here in full because they are more useful shared than withheld. The training is where you learn to deliver them.

Keep reading. The rest of the framework library is at the Library, and our longer articles are on the blog.

Great Energy is an independent educational organization founded by Christopher Grant and Daniela Hess.
